Extract Ratios Explained: What 10:1, 30:1 and 300:1 Mean
Herbal labels often show ratios like 10:1 or 300:1. Here is what they mean, using our Alpha+ label as a worked example.

Many herbal labels list an ingredient followed by a ratio, such as Tongkat Ali Root Extract 300:1. These ratios are one of the most misunderstood parts of a label. Our Alpha+ uses several, so it makes a good worked example.
What an extract ratio means
An extract ratio describes how much raw plant material went into making the extract. A 10:1 extract means roughly 10kg of dried plant was used to make 1kg of extract. The higher the first number, the more concentrated the extract is relative to the starting material.
Worked examples from Alpha+
| Ingredient | Amount | Ratio | Approx. raw material equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fadogia agrestis stem extract | 600mg | 10:1 | 6g |
| Desert hyacinth (Cistanche tubulosa) stem extract | 600mg | 10:1 | 6g |
| Tongkat ali root extract | 400mg | 300:1 | 120g |
| Ashwagandha root extract | 100mg | 30:1 | 3g |
| Bugleweed turkesterone whole plant extract | 100mg | 20:1 | 2g |
The equivalent is calculated by multiplying the extract amount by the first number in the ratio. Alpha+ also lists black pepper fruit extract standardised to 95% piperine, 5mg.
Ratio vs standardisation
A ratio tells you about the starting material. A standardised extract instead guarantees a set percentage of a particular compound, such as “95% piperine” or “80% silymarin”. Some labels give one, some give both.
