How to Read a Supplement Label: A Practical Guide
Serving size, amount per serve, active ingredients and directions: a plain-English walk through every part of a supplement panel.

A supplement label carries more useful information than most people realise. Once you know where to look, you can compare two products in under a minute. Here is a walk through each part, using the panels published on every Elevate Nutra product page.
1. Start with the serving size
Every amount on the panel is listed per serve. The serving size tells you how many capsules or tablets make up one serve. Two products can look very different until you notice that one lists one capsule per serve and the other lists two.
2. Read the amount per serve
This column lists each active ingredient and how much of it is in one serve. Units matter:
- mg (milligram) is one thousandth of a gram.
- mcg or µg (microgram) is one thousandth of a milligram.
- Some vitamins may also be listed in IU (international units).
Always compare like with like. 180 mcg and 0.18 mg are the same amount written two ways.
3. Look for the form of each ingredient
Minerals are usually supplied bound to another compound, for example magnesium glycinate or zinc bisglycinate. The label names the form, and good labels also tell you how much of the mineral itself is present. We cover this in Elemental vs compound: what the numbers mean.
4. Check the other ingredients
Below the active ingredients you will usually find the capsule shell or tablet ingredients. This is where to check for anything you prefer to avoid.
5. Directions and warnings
Directions tell you how many to take and how often. Warning statements are there for a reason, so read them every time, especially when starting something new or combining products.
6. Pack size
Finally, look at the count on the front, such as 60 capsules. Divide it by the serving size to see how many serves the bottle contains.
A quick checklist
- How many capsules or tablets make one serve?
- What is the amount of each active ingredient per serve?
- Which form is each ingredient in?
- What else is in the capsule or tablet?
- What do the directions and warnings say?
- How many serves are in the pack?
Every Elevate Nutra product page includes its full supplement panel, so you can work through this list before you choose. Browse the range.
